Glidden® Paint Brand Sponsors 2013 National Student Advertising Competition

WASHINGTON DC – For the 40th annual National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), the American Advertising Federation (AAF) is excited to announce the Glidden® paint brand as the 2013 client sponsor.  Part of AkzoNobel, the world’s largest paint and coatings company, Glidden is a well respected paint brand serving the do-it-yourself (DIY) and professional markets.

The competition requires AAF college chapter members to develop a 32-page marketing campaign and 20-minute presentation in response to a real-world case study co-authored by the Glidden brand and the AAF Academic Division.  The case study will focus on the Glidden brand as it relates to increasing customer awareness at Walmart stores and driving purchasing behavior among the various Glidden products that are available at the retailer’s 3,200+ stores across the country.  Each student team will first participate at the district level, and then winning teams will advance to the national level.  Student teams will pitch their campaign to a judging panel selected by the sponsor during the AAF’s National Conference, the annual ADMERICA!, to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, June 5-8, 2013.

”We’re excited to be tapping into some of the country’s brightest, most creative and innovative student marketers to help us address this real opportunity for the Glidden brand,” said Rob Horton, vice president of North American marketing for AkzoNobel, makers of Glidden paint. “The opportunity to communicate Glidden’s brand message to the more than 120-million people who visit a Walmart store each week has endless possibilities; the challenge, though, is for the students to hone in our target audience and deliver a breakthrough marketing strategy that inspires and drives action.”

The AAF has 15 districts with over 200 college chapters represented.  Last year, 152 AAF college chapters competed at the district level, and it is anticipated that that number will increase in 2013.

“Having the Glidden brand as our NSAC sponsor will be a new challenge for our college chapter members since the program has not had a client in this category before.  Paint products are highly relevant to the millennial market with it being a top of mind home décor option for dorm rooms, apartments, and even possibly, first home purchases.  We look forward to having our students help Glidden build the type of brand loyalty that will stay among this core market as they transition through their lives,” states Constance Cannon Frazier, Chief Operating Officer, AAF.

The AAF and client sponsor are anxious to see what new innovative ideas the students have in store to target the millennial market.  Year after year, the quality of work and level of creativity surpasses the previous year, and sponsors have been known to implement the ideas generated by these impressive, high-caliber student teams.

Public Service Projects

We are looking for a few awesome, fun and talented people to help lead the 2012-2013 public service committee. This year will start with our ongoing project in support of the Arbor House and our continuous support of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fund-raising events. We will also participate in ACEL’s Champions for Charity Kickball Tournament, plus two other great causes. Please contact me if you are interested in helping!

In Support of the Arbor House

The public service committee for Advertising Federation of Gainesville’s year 2012 – 2013 will continue the on going project of doing an ad campaign for Arbor House of Gainesville. Arbor House is a residential program for women 18 years and older who need assistance during and after crisis pregnancies. They are breaking the circle of poverty two at a time. In addition to Arbor House, the public service committee will work with several non profits in the community to assist them in getting public service message written and recorded for broadcast. The public service committee will continue to participate in several programs that will benefit the American Cancer Society. Are you looking for fresh ideas or answers to your social media problems? It’s time to rev up your social media machine for the summer. Brian Cox oversees Online Engagement for United Way Worldwide. In this role he is responsible for managing, executing and innovating online and in social space.

Before joining United Way in 2011, Brian’s professional history was political, and he is a self-described “political junkie.” He graduated Northeastern University in Boston with a degree in political Science and served in several capacities for the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.

Subsequently, Brian moved to Washington, DC where he assisted Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York in raising funds for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in the 2008 cycle.

Just before coming to United Way, Brian was on the ballot himself in 2010, as a candidate for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner to represent his Capitol Hill neighborhood on DCs Neighborhood Commission. Applying his passion for community organizing with his interest online outreach, Brian ran a hard fought campaign against a several-term incumbent, but ultimately lost that election by seven votes, far less than 1% of the total votes cast.
